       Artist Statement

I dance because it is something I can call my own. Coming from a household with many siblings, I have to share a lot of my things. Dance has always been something that I can use as an escape. It helps me leave the worries of the outside world and even give me an outlet to address problems that I feel that are important. It also allows me to express what I can not say in words.

During my freshman year in high school I had seen Alvin Ailey American Dance theater for the first time. It was such a monumental moment in my life. Watching how the dancers executed movements so beautifully I could not stop crying. After this performance, I knew that I had to become a professional dancer because I want to influence the same way that Ailey influenced me.

Being a dance major, dance is actually something that I am studying academically. I now have to take out time to analyze my movement more. Although I was going to a career center for dance where I was being graded, things are much more harder on a collegiate level. I am not just challenged by the work that my teachers give, but I am challenged internally, and by my classmates. This is only the beginning and I am excited to see what the future has in store for me.
